We don't know key factors, like the capacity of the energy storage system compared to the output of the main weapon, the output of the main weapon compared to the capacity of the power plant of the Death Star, or several other factors that would determine how rapidly the Death Star can fire its primary weapon for planet-busting purposes. Without knowing these details, we can't say that the movie didn't go the most realistic way.

you forget one key point in your argument. the Death Star has been around longer than 24 hours. so you know, it had time to charge up more than shot. its not like its a giant space Musket.

This would be impossible for the original Death Star required 24 hours to charge its super laser. This would have been even slower, giving the Rebels more time to fight back.
